“I wish I could tell you about the South Pacific. The way it actually was. The endless ocean. The infinite specks of coral we called islands. Coconut palms nodding gracefully toward the ocean. Reefs upon which waves broke into spray, and inner lagoons, lovely beyond description." --- James Michener Return to

I was a bit skeptical at first, when my mother-in-law suggested a trip to Maui; but after spending a week there just relaxing and enjoying the spectacular beaches and scenery, I'm convinced that there are two "must sees" for anyone who wants to visit Hawaii - the USS Arizona memorial, and the island of Maui.

My pictures do not do justice to Maui, but I hope viewers can get some sense of its beauty.

The links below take you to some of our pictures from the trip. To view the pictures full size, just click on the thumbnails.
I've grouped this set of pictures into:

  • Beach Scenery
  • The Breathtaking Kula Botanical Gardens
  • The Road to Hana

  • Various scenes along Maui's beautiful beaches

Kula Botanical Gardens - after a nice and easy morning drive up the mountain a bit, along a scenic narrow road, you'll see a non-imposing sign. Take the turn. I could have spent the entire day at this serene and unassuming place, viewing the native plants, greenhouses, and ponds. Locally owned, very affordable.

If Maui is a "must see" for a Hawaii visit, then the famous "Road to Hana" is a must do. Many elect to drive it themselves, but we recommend taking one of the entertaining and informative bus tours. If you drive it yourself, the driver will not enjoy the scenery because he or she will be too busy concentrating on the narrow roads, narrower bridges, and hairpin turns ... and if it's raining, then the downed trees and the washouts.
The scenery is indescribable - dramatic waterfalls, lush vegetation, imposing peaks, heartstopping valleys, and lava beaches.
